My mom’s birthday is coming up & I’ve been thinking about some of the birthdays we’ve celebrated together. One in particular stands out for the sheer strangeness of how the day began. We were all scrambling to get ready for school. The younger kids were eating breakfast & I walked into the kitchen from my bedroom (we were living in 2 trailer houses with a walkway between them…this was awesome for me ‘cuz it meant I got my own room!) and probably grabbed a glass of milk. (I am NOT a big fan of breakfast in the morning…I need some coffee & between 2-3 hours before I want food).
Anyway, one of us kids looked out the kitchen window & uttered the following sentence, “Ummm MOM, there’s a buffalo outside the window!” Sure enough there was a full-sized bull bison fogging up the outside of the kitchen window. He had escaped from the pasture a little down the road and wandered up into the yard. We tried to get a hold of Dad on the phone (he was in the barn milking like every morning). Mom decided to try to walk over to the barn & let Dad know the situation. The bison had backed off from the house a little & was wandering around the large lawn area that was divided from the rest of the yard by a long line of pine trees.
Mom bundled up & headed toward the barn down the left side of the pine trees….Almost right a way the bison headed in the same direction down the right side of the trees. There was a small trailer right at the edge of the trees on Mom’s side. Just as she got to the trailer the bison looked around his side right at Mom. Into the trailer she went. So there we were standing at the window gaping at the trailer where Mom was trapped by a bison. I’m 100% sure that was NOT how she had pictured spending any part of her day.
I don’t remember the resolution of that episode….what I guess happened is that one of the boys snuck out the back of the house & way around the yard to the barn to get Dad who managed to scare the bison off & let Mom out of the trailer. No matter what exactly happened I’m sure it was one of the more unusual birthdays Mom ever had.
